A woman who accepted donations for cancer treatments lied about having the disease, according to North Carolina deputies.

Amy Ellissa Hammer “fraudulently” told people she had chronic lymphocytic leukemia, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release. She took money on a Facebook page called Amy’s Promise and had T-shirt sales, the release said.

Authorities say they “discovered that Trinity Wesleyan Church of Seagrove had planned a fundraiser” this weekend to help Hammer’s family, but the event has now been canceled.

The church on its Facebook page said Hammer “was not honest about having cancer” and apologized for the situation.

“We have met with the Detectives about the situation and we are assisting in any way needed,” the church wrote in its Facebook post.

The sheriff’s office said Trinity Wesleyan sold raffle tickets and asked people who bought the tickets to give them to authorities.

The ongoing investigation comes after Randolph County deputies on March 8 received a report Hammer may have been “obtaining property by false pretense,” according to the press release. Charges in connection with the case are pending, the sheriff’s office said Thursday afternoon.
