A uniformed Shreveport police officer was shot four times, including once in the head while on her way to work Wednesday night, killing her. In a separate incident, a Raleigh police officer was shot several times while trying to take a suspect into custody. He has reportedly undergone surgery but his condition is unknown.
In Shreveport, the murdered officer has been identified as Chateri Payne. Police detained someone for questioning, but it isn’t clear if they are a suspect.
In a statement, the Shreveport Police Officers Association thanked citizens for their prayers and genuine sympathy while calling Officer Payne a young and beautiful person who was proving herself to be a capable professional.
In Raleigh, the officer who was shot multiple times last night has been identified as Officer C.D. Ainsworth.
Two men have been charged in connection with the attempted murder.
According to the News & Observer, Cedric Jamal Kearney, 23, was charged with attempted murder, assault on a law enforcement officer, robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy. Antonio Dequan Fletcher, 20, was charged with possession of a stolen firearm.
Raleigh Police Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown said in a statement, “the Raleigh Police Department is grateful for all of the support from the various law enforcement agencies, the surgeons and medical staff and the community,” Deck-Brown said. “We ask that everyone continue to pray for the officer and his family.”
