Helicopter footage from a deadly police shooting in Texas earlier this year shows -in high definition- just how dangerous highway patrol work can be.
The video was released by the Texas Department of Public Safety and recounts a February 18 incident, which resulted in one trooper wounded and one suspect dead.
33-year-old suspect Ernest Manuel Montelongo was initially stopped in connection to a shooting along I-10 near Graytown. According to News4SA, when a trooper pulled over, he gave a fake name and managed to flee the scene.
After a helicopter located Montelongo’s vehicle in Bexar County, troopers once again took chase. When the vehicle came to a stop, Montelongo began shooting at DPS troopers, hitting one in the arm. Returning fire, the troopers managed to mortally wound the suspect.
During the shooting, the wounded trooper had the mental clarity to attempt application of a C.A.T tourniquet, eventually securing the device with the help of his comrade. The DPS helicopter assisting with the chase then provided impromptu MEDEVAC for the trooper.
