All northbound lanes of Interstate 95 near Hillsboro Boulevard opened up to traffic after a police pursuit that originated in Miami-Dade County came to an end there.
The northbound lanes had been closed for about two hours before the single lane opened before 5 p.m. Tuesday. The rest of the lanes were flowing by 6:30 p.m.
A Toyota Corolla that matched the description of a vehicle used in a Miami-area robbery on April 7 led Miami-Dade Police on the chase, said Detective Lee Cowart, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade Police Department.
“They’re investigating why they fled, the violations, if any, that occurred during the fleeing, and the initial robbery that occurred on April 7,” Cowart said.
A rumor that the Toyota was occupied by a homicide suspect was unfounded, he said.
An officer attempted to pull the Toyota over in the vicinity of Hialeah near Northwest 87th Street and Northwest 32nd Avenue, west of the interstate, Cowart said.
The car, driven by a man with one woman for a passenger, fled the attempted stop and led police northward on I-95, Cowart said.
“The vehicle finally crashes,” Cowart said, bringing the pursuit to an end at the Broward-Palm Beach county line at about 3 p.m.
The Toyota appeared to have blown a tire during the chase.
The driver and his passenger were detained at the scene. Neither one appeared to be injured, Cowart said, but they were both taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution.
Eventually, the Toyota driver, identified as Ramon Umpierre, 42, was booked into the Palm Beach County jail on a out-of-county warrant.
“No citizens, thank God, no officers, and apparently neither occupant of the vehicle were injured,” he said.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers forced northbound motorists to exit the interstate at Hillsboro Boulevard in Deerfield Beach for much of the late afternoon.
Police activity kept most of the lanes closed down throughout the afternoon, police said.
