A standoff in Orlando is ongoing as police try to force the surrender of a man who shot an officer and has taken four children hostage.
Orlando police Chief John Mina reported that a man accused of beating his girlfriend initiated the hostage situation at around 11:45 PM last night, after the girlfriend in question fled the residence.
Upon arriving on the scene, police found themselves engaged in a firefight, with one officer wounded in the armed encounter. Rushed to the hospital, the officer is reported to have “very significant injuries” but is expected to survive.
Surrounding the site, police have since been engaged with trying to get the gunman to release four children he’s holding as hostages, aged 1, 7, 10 and 12.
According to WESH, nearby residents were ordered to evacuate, many still in their pajamas at the time police began knocking on their doors.
The situation is ongoing and will be updated as it progresses.
