A suspect was killed when South Carolina law enforcement responded to an active shooter situation, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office tweeted back in February.

The sheriff’s office said shots were fired at a deputy in Huger, according to the tweet. Huger is about 30 miles away from Charleston, according to Google Maps.

“All deputies are okay,” the sheriff’s office tweeted. No other injuries were reported, according to WCBD.

Sheriff Duane Lewis said the suspect was fatally shot by law enforcement after he opened fire on deputies, WCIV reported.

The incident occurred after 3 p.m., when sheriff’s office said a deputy stopped a driver for speeding, and as he was speaking the suspect “pulled out a gun and started firing,” WCSC reported.

Law enforcement officers took cover behind their vehicles, which were hit by gunfire in the shootout that lasted approximately 30 minutes, per WCBD.

After saying he would surrender, the suspect opened fire again when deputies approached, according to the sheriff’s office, which said the suspect was then fatally shot, WCSC reported.

Berkeley County school officials said students on a bus leaving Philip Simmons High School were brought back to the school because of the shooting, according to WCIV.

This is a developing story; check back for updates.
