Multiple people are dead and many have been injured in a crash that has closed down a portion of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Westmoreland County.
The crash occurred early Sunday morning in Mount Pleasant Township involving multiple vehicles, including a tour bus lying on its side in what is being described as a “mass casualty incident,” WPXI is reporting.
There are also multiple tractor-trailers and an unknown number of passenger vehicles involved, according to KDKA.
According to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission’s Travel Condition map, the crash occurred at mile post 86.1 between Exit 91 to Donegal and Exit 75 to New Stanton.
All lanes are closed in both directions.
The crash was reported by Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission around 3:37 a.m.
There is no word yet on how many deaths or injuries there have been. Reports indicate the Westmoreland County Coroner was called to the scene, and the National Transportation Safety Board is sending investigators.
Pennsylvania Turnpike spokesman Carl DeFebo confirmed on Twitter there have been multiple fatalities, adding a prolonged closure is likely.
