Five people were killed and one was hospitalized after a shooting at a home in Ponder Wednesday morning.
Fire officials told our partners at KXAS-TV (NBC 5) that they were called to a home in the 600 block of Lonestar Park Lane about 8:30 a.m.
They said they were told at first that someone had a self-inflicted gunshot wound but later learned that multiple people were injured inside the home.
Officials have not confirmed the number of victims involved, but multiple media sources reported that five people were found dead.
Denton County Sheriff’s Capt. Orlando Hinojosa said the call was initially reported as a burglary in progress. He confirmed that one person was taken to Medical City Denton in unknown condition and that the suspected shooter is a man.
Two dogs were removed from the home and are in the care of a neighbor, Hinojosa said.
“I want to pray for the victims of the deceased family,” Hinojosa said.
A Denton County sheriff’s spokesman said deputies are “not actively looking for a shooter” and there is no threat to the neighborhood.
A neighbor, who declined to give his name, said there have been no issues in the neighborhood in his 14 years there.
“It’s sad,” he said. “I cannot believe this. It’s like a dream, a nightmare.”
