Chicago’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability has released several videos of an officer-involved shooting from the West Side earlier this year that left one suspect dead.
The May 3rd incident involved several CPD officers and Sharell Brown, an ex-convict and known gangbanger.
Officers initially began firing when they spotted what appeared to be a weapon during their approach and then located the gun after they had caught up with him during a foot pursuit.
In one video, an officer can be seen recovering the weapon.
According to WGN-TV, Brown’s family didn’t see a weapon and feels the police just shot at the dangerous parolee for no reason.
“They murdered my son,” LaQwan Moore, Brown’s father, said. “If you guys look at the video, at the beginning, they tell him they’re going to kill him and they went back in that gangway and did exactly what they said they were going to do.”
“The person that you killed, that was my baby,” Brown’s mother, Latricia Brown, said to the officer through a television interview. It should be noted that she did not watch the video.
Relatives claim Brown was on parole, but working hard to stay out of trouble.
COPA has not requested that the officer be relieved and the CPD acknowledged that a weapon was recovered at the scene.
