Seven inmates are dead and seventeen are wounded in South Carolina after an uprising at the Lee Correctional Institution erupted on Sunday evening.

The Bishopville facility found itself under attack from within at around 7:15 PM last night, with fighting spreading across three housing units, according to information from the SC Corrections Department.

According to USA TODAY, the riot had been quelled by 3 AM on Monday morning, but not without several inmate casualties.

Fortunately for the corrections officers, no uniformed personnel were among the injured or dead.

“All SCDC staff and responding law enforcement officers are safe and accounted for,” authorities stated.

Home to about 1,700 of some of South Carolina’s most violent offenders, the prison has seen several cases of extreme violence over the years, including hostage situations and murders.
