Trooper that fell from a bridge while chasing a suspect expected to make full recovery

An Ohio State Trooper is hospitalized with several broken bones following a high-speed interstate pursuit.

WTOL News reports the trooper was hurt after he fell from a bridge early Friday morning.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol tells WTOL News after a Michigan officer began the pursuit following a traffic stop at 4 a.m., the chase progressed from US-23 and into Ohio on I-475 and then onto northbound I-75.At this point Ohio Trooper Brian Mull became involved.

According to WTOL News, the suspect tried to escape officers by going inside construction zone barrels and speeding. The suspect then emerged from the construction zone and struck Trooper Brian Mull’s patrol car and kept on going NB on I-75 until he reached an overpass.

At this point, WTOL News reports, officials allege the suspect left the car in drive and jumped out. The suspect then ran to the overpass when Mull grabbed him from behind. Both of them went over the railing.

Mull was taken to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center to be treated for his injuries. The suspect was taken into custody and also went to the hospital for treatment.

Since the incident, WTOL reports, officers from many agencies are visiting their injured brother.

“Anytime an officer is injured in the line of duty, that automatically brings out everyone to make sure they’re okay,” Shawn Robinson of the OSHP tells WTOL News. “So it’s nice to see that and especially all the officers for us and TPD, Lucas County. It’s been nice to see them reach out and make sure everyone is going to be okay.”

Mull, 34, is a five-year veteran of the Ohio State Highway Patrol and is expected to make a full recovery.

The suspect is also suffering from injuries sustained in the fall, but WTOL News reports they’re not as severe.

Charges have not been filed at this point.
