Thousands of officers protest during Montreal’s 375th birthday celebration

As Montreal celebrated its 375th birthday on Wednesday, thousands of officers filled the streets to protest the city’s department.

Playing loud music and marching to city hall, the officers have been without a contract since New Year’s Eve of 2014.

The police union paid for giant billboards of Mayor Denis Coderre wearing a party hat and saying “A mayor who shows contempt for his police officers for three years must be celebrated.”

The picture is worth a thousand words to the Montreal Police Brotherhood, who feel ignored by the administration.

While no one was arrested, Montreal PD Chief Inspector Alain Gagnon said the protesting officers would receive “no special treatment.”

According to CBC, the police warned of the event ahead of time and took special dress code precautions in order to ensure a visual distinction between on and off-duty officers.

The city also erupted with protests concerning several other various causes.
