I’d like to start off thanking Jim Preston and Chip DeBlock of LEOAFFAIRS.COM for bridging the gap between my career as a professional fighter and how it applies to law enforcement.  For over a decade now I have been instructing law enforcement agencies and military special forces all over the world.  I have applied my family’s traditional martial art, Gracie Jiu-jitsu, with the common applications of law enforcement defensive tactics.  For those of you who have had the opportunity to take one of my weeklong classes, you know the benefits of the techniques.  To those who have not had the chance, I hope to see you soon.

The timing of my introduction on LEOAFFAIRS.COM couldn’t be better, as I am currently training to fight the UFC champion Matt Hughes.  For my first article I’d like to concentrate on the things that are critical in a confrontation.

During my training I focus on Physical, Mental and Emotional harmony.  Physically I follow a resistance training regiment along with an intense cardiovascular routine.  Mentally I prepare by focusing on the challenge at hand.  For me, that challenge is in the ring with a named opponent.  For you that conflict could occur anywhere, at any time and without the safeguards of rules.  Make a habit of rehearsing scenarios in your mind and how you would successfully handle these situations.  Whether you’re at work, at home or at a restaurant with your spouse, this gets you in the habit of being prepared for the unexpected.  Emotions have the ability to fuel our actions.  Don’t let emotions take the place of cognitive thinking.  If you remain calm and level headed in and out of the ring, other areas of your life (including your safety and job security) will be positively affected.

In closing, training is not just something you do while at work or in the ring.  It is an awareness that incorporates Physical, Mental and Emotional congruence in everyday life.  In my next article we will cover the importance of The Will to Survive.
