A suspected shoplifter was killed Thursday afternoon after shooting a police officer in the Chicago area.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the coroner’s office identified the deceased shoplifter as 43-year-old Warren Christian of East Chicago, Indiana- ruling the death a homicide.
Lansing PD Chief Dennis Murrin said the suspect grappled with an officer outside the Ultra Foods before wounding a second officer with a firearm as he ran past a series of storefronts.
Murrin said the suspect fired the first shot, wounding the officer with a non-life-threatening injury before being shot by one or more officers who were responding to the incident.
Christian was rushed to the hospital, though it is unclear when he was pronounced dead.
Murrin has declined to note whether or not the officer is still in the hospital. The Illinois State Police are handling the police-involved shooting investigation.
