Off-duty officer involved in shootout in San Bernardino

Jan. 09–SAN BERNARDINO — Police are investigating an exchange of gunfire this afternoon at 43rd Street and Mountain View Avenue.

“At about 1:43 p.m., our dispatch got a call about shots fired in the area of 43rd (Street) and Mountain View Avenue,” said Eileen Hards, a San Bernardino police spokeswoman. “Officers arrived on scene and found that there was an off-duty officer who was involved in an altercation and there was some shots fired.”

Police are investigating several potential crime scenes.

Officers tracked down the vehicle that the suspects were in, Hards said. One of those suspects was detained, one is wounded at a local Kaiser Hospital, and the other is still outstanding, she said.

Several people have been detained in the 1900 block of N. D Street as the investigation unfolds.

While San Bernardino police confirmed an off-duty law enforcement officer was involved in the shooting, they refused to identify the agency where the officer works.

A team of investigators from Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was observed at the shooting scene.

Jonathan Albin, who lives on Mountain View, said his car suffered a bullet hole in the windshield.

Ablin and fellow neighbors said they were home when they heard two bursts of gunfire, 11 shots total.

A beige Nissan sedan, which neighbors say was involved in shooting, remains in the middle of road, running and with its windshield wipers on.
