Heat: Fire C.S.I. and the War on Arson and
Murder by Peter A. Micheels, -- The little-known
life of a fire marshal is part police detection and part
forensic investigation. The vivid accounts take readers to the
scenes of our most horrifying crimes: mob burnouts, lives
destroyed by insurance torchings, grisly arson murders
committed out of jealousy or revenge. Fire marshals carry
nothing but years of experience battling the flames, a badge,
and a gun to their job. Here are their most unforgettable
cases: the suspicious blazes, the weird breaks, the manhunts,
the dramatic shootouts, and the ultimate moment when disaster
is averted or a child's life is saved. In this grippingly
authentic oral history, the fire marshals speak movingly about
those they have arrested and the tough decisions they have
made. Capturing the unmistakable voices of the firehouse, the
courthouse, and the street, Micheels takes you to the heat of
the fire and gets to the heart of the crime.

Describes the growing disillusionment with the War on Drugs in the
law enforcement community, the growing Support for reform, and some
of the ways in which the Drug War corrupts police forces and
encourages a war mentality that is at odds with a police officer's

The Sugarland Express (1974) -- Steven Spielberg's first feature film was, in fact, a
small-scale commercial flop--but good enough to earn him a shot at
making his name directing Jaws. Goldie Hawn and William Atherton
play a young couple who, after some bad breaks and mistakes, have
their child taken away by the state of Texas. So they take the law
into their own hands and take off to retrieve him, on the run from
the police--lots and lots of police--all the while turning
themselves into a cause c鬨bre..

Boys of Crime -- The FBI marked the golden anniversary of its
10 Most Wanted list with pride. 458 people made the list in
the last half-century, 429 have been caught, several went down
shooting. Cases against 15 individuals who were never caught were
eventually dropped, and 4 fugitives were removed from the list
because others were deemed more deserving. The FBI noted that 134 of
429 who have been tracked down were captured as a direct result of
cooperation by alert citizens.
One Woman's
Conscience --Coleen
Rowley grew up wanting nothing more than to serve her country by
working for the FBI. But she did a much greater service to the
nation by speaking the truth. Her now famous
whistle-blower memo about the bureau's mishandling of terrorist
threats ruffled a lot of feathers in the intelligence community;
while the media hailed her as an American hero, the FBI turned its
back on her.
Kathy
Burke was already a New York City police legend. Then she went
beyond the call of duty with a groundbreaking Support group for
injured officers.
