A Texas deputy and his wife opened fire on two men who reportedly attacked them at a gas station while the lawman was off-duty, according to authorities.
The incident took place on Saturday evening after two suspects (described as black males) walked up to the deputy’s personal vehicle and began attacking him as he was preparing to refuel at a gas station.
“Once the victim leaves the store, the suspect vehicle circles around and pulls up on the side street, where you can see them both exit the vehicle and assault the subject as he’s putting ice in the bed of the truck,” said Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Lt. John Schmitt.
According to Chron, both the deputy and his wife drew their pistols and shot at the suspects, who fled into a red pickup truck.
It is unclear who was hit or how many shots were fired, although the deputy was taken to the hospital after being kicked in the head, resulting in lacerations, missing teeth and a broken jaw. His gun-toting wife, however, is uninjured.
Authorities say the 20-year law enforcement veteran was not likely targeted due to his not being in uniform and that the Department is actively investigating the incident.
