Lawmen in Wichita, Kansas are investigating a deadly weekend shooting that left one suspect and a K-9 dead.
WPD reports that officers responded to a call at 8 PM on Saturday concerning an armed man causing a disturbance in a Wichita-area trailer park. Upon arrival, a female victim informed the police that the suspect in question was armed and threatened to kill her.
Cordoning off the area, WPD officers contacted the suspect as he was coming out of the home. Despite being ordered to turn himself in, the man ignored police orders and began to go back into the home.
In response to the suspect’s defiance, police released a K-9, who made contact with the suspect’s leg before the suspect could enter the domicile. Unfortunately, the move cost the dog his life- the suspect drew a pistol and shot the dog before police were able to open fire on the suspect.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the local hospital. A Necropsy of the K-9 will determine if the suspect or the police ultimately killed the dog, a 5-year police veteran named Rooster.
“We believe the K-9 was shot by the suspect, but will know for sure after the necropsy and review of the evidence,” WPD Sergeant Woodrow told KSN.
The investigation into the shooting continues, with city, county and state authorities involved in the incident.
