YORK, South Carolina – Six York County Sheriff’s Deputies have been disciplined or fired after an investigation found they were having sex while on duty.
The investigation discovered one female sergeant had sex with five different male deputies at various times while on duty as far back as 2003. Jennifer Forsythe, now a former sergeant, and Daniel Hamrick, now a former deputy, admitted to having sex while on duty starting in 2012 and continuing into this year.
The four other deputies that were disciplined include a captain, a lieutenant and two other sergeants.
Hamrick and Forsythe were both terminated from employment by Sheriff Kevin Tolson.
Tolson released a statement saying “the results of this investigation are very troubling and cast a dark cloud over the York County Sheriff’s Office and its reputation as a professional organization.”
Lieutenant Brian Boling was demoted to Master Deputy II after Forsythe admitted to having sex with him multiple times in 2007, as well as other encounters while away for training classes. Captain Carson Neely was suspended without pay for also having a sexual relationship with Forsythe between 2003 and 2007. Sergeants Wayne Richardson and Buddy Brown were suspended for two weeks without pay.
“The actions of these officers have undermined the public’s confidence in our organization and required swift and serious action. I showed leniency to those Deputies whose conduct occurred years ago, even more than a decade ago, but make no mistake, this conduct will not be tolerated in this agency on my watch,” Tolson said.
Although Tolson took office this past January and noted that most of the offenses took place before he was the sheriff, he used the incident to set an example for the rest of his deputies.
